Road for Pedestrians or Parking?
First of all some clarifications-
We have to admit that civic amenities and order is much better in Thane city compared to chaos in neighboring Kalyan – Dombivali or Virar- Vasai or many suburbs of Mumbai.
Thanks for Dr. T Chandrashekhar and new commissioner Mr. Sethi is doing well.
Also I can understand that traffic police of the city have to stand all day amidst pollution, traffic and crowd. And their number is short to control growing traffic disorder.
But I am sorry to say that situation of roads in Thane, especially around Railway station has deteriorated since the transfer of Dr. Chandrashekhar. So this is an attempt to perform duty of a vigilant ‘Thanekar’ by pointing about disorder on streets of Thane.
This article is about ‘Sane Guruji Path’. The street parallel to Gokhle Road- especially around Thane Janata Bank (Naupada) corner
I don't deny that there is shortage of parking space, especially around Railway Station. Sane Guruji Path attracts less traffic compared to Gokhale Road. But does that mean Pay and Park contractor is in charge of the road?
Everyday you can witness that motorbikes are parked on both sides of road. Many times three rows of motor bikes on one side of road which occupy large portion of the road.
Many times tempos and trucks are parked by the shop owners (near Bharat Dairy).
In front of Thane Janata Bank – there are motor bikes of staff members of bank and in front of that there is a Rickshaw Stand with the board that No Parking For Rickshaws.
Every week there is addition in number of hawkers selling Fruit Juices and Pani Puri.
Also there are cars and vehicles standing in the middle to block vacant parts of the road.
Everything goes on in the presence of Traffic Police. RTO authorities toe the vehicles but they don't cross Thane Janata Bank limit.
So can we demand under Right to Information Act?
What are the rules about Parking on roads allocated for Vehicle Parking?
Which authority controls Pay and Park contractors?
Is it allowed for Pay and Park to use both sides of road for parking? If smaller roads like ‘Ghantali Path’ or ‘Hitavardhini Path’ have arrangement like Parking on alternative sides (On Even and Odd Dates)
I remember, few years back, there was widening of Sane Guruji Path and many shops were evacuated. Soon TMT buses started occupying most of the widened road, leaving hardly any space for pedestrians. Residents of the ward, protested against it and finally buses had to go. Now it seems like we need to repeat the events in past.
